Position Report Almonds shipments for March continue at a record setting pace. In March, shipments hit 57.7 million pounds compared to 45.4 million pounds last MArch (an increase of 12%). Total shipments for this year now stand at 613.7 million pounds, which, again, i san increase over last year of 82.0 million pounds. Assuming that the industry stays on this record course, shipments for the year could total 820.0 million pounds. This would leave the Carry-in at only 80 million pounds. Based on the new demand levels a crop of 900 - 950 million pounds should not create over supply problems.
Minturn Nut's Final 2001 Pool Payment - "Your checks in the mail!" Who wants to hear that? Minturn Nut's FINAL Pool payment was mailed Monday April 15th. Actually you should have received your check by now. Minturn Nut has stood by the final payment date of April 15th with our growers in mind during these times of high production and low industry prices. We feel confident that by the time other handlers announce their final prices (somewhere from June to October), Minturn Nut's 2001 crop final payment will stand up well! Contracting for 2002 Crop Minturn Nut is currently out contracting with growers for our seasonal pool for both 2002 and future crops. Minturn Nut offers a one to three year contract, with a bonus incentive for growers signing a three-year contract. Our payment schedule is aggressive and our five-year return comparison stands up well against any handler in the industry. Minturn Nut is targeting to process and market 25 million pounds this year. If you have any questions, please call our office 559-665-8500. For those growers who are already contracted with Minturn Nut for the 2002 crop, we certainly appreciate your business and will work hard to insure a profitable return. 2002 Crop Potential With the almonds now visible there are the usual varied opinions on potential crop size. The varieties that seem to be the most disappointing are the carmel, butte, and padre. "Crazy top" appears to be more prevalent than ever. Frost damage took out a big percentage of the West Sacramento Valley. Losses have been estimated at 15 - 25 million pounds. Most agree that on a per acre bases this crop will not match the 1999 crop of 1,740 pounds per acre. However, when you increase the total acres from 1999, there could be a record crop in total pounds. Opinions on crop size range from 875 million pounds on the low end to 975 million pounds on the high end. Realistically the crop is probably in the range of 900 - 925 million pounds! |
